City of Lakes – Udaipur

I took a night train from Jaipur to Udaipur so that I would have much more time to spend in Udaipur. The train ride was around 8 hours, and I would be very frustrated with myself if I had wasted the 8 hours during the day, reached Udaipur just in the evening, and left early. I booked a AC-2 tier ticket and the decision to take the night train to Udaipur proved to be a very good decision and the travel was really comfortable as well. Jaipur has a rush, wherever you might see, you have a fear of missing out, like our twenties, if you will. Udaipur on the other hand is more laid back. First of all, it is so pretty, quiet and small, and not so touristy. You can just go to a Ghati, dip your feet in the water and just let go of things, I want to say like in our forties, but I cannot be sure they are going to get any more relaxed. Anyways, let’s not get sad, let’s go to Udaipur.

I had a one and a half day to spend in Udaipur. I was on a week-long solo travelling through different cities in India, and it was exhausting. I treated myself to a window view room in Zostel Udaipur. Udaipur is also a popular wedding destination, so I think the best time to visit Udaipur is also September/October before the big wedding season hits. Lying on the banks of Fathesagar and Pichola, it has a lot of cute cafes, breakfast places as well.

Places to visit

I bookmarked all the places to go, the places to eat, here like always. You can find the map here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/4VXitDgdVW13ppL89

Must do

Spend the evening at Ambrai Ghat, dip your legs in water, lay back and enjoy. The palace looks magical, and all the light throughout the banks of Lake Pichola looks just amazing, puppet show at Bagheri Haweli

  • Gangaur Ghat (Go early morning)
  • Udaipur City palace
  • Ambrai Ghat
  • Fateh Sagar Lake

If you can

These are outside of the main city. I would advise you to rent a scooter

  • Bahubali hills
  • Monsoon palace

How I managed my itinerary

Day 0

Take a night train from Jaipur to Udaipur

Day 1

Reach Udaipur 7 in the morning

Check-in, get fresh at the Hotel

Breakfast at …

Go to Ganghori Ghat (Earlier the better, prayers and pigeons and just sound of the water)

Roam around Udaipur

Lunch at …

Visit City Palace

Evening at Ambrai ghat

  • Few college kids singing and vibing, a few couples scattered throughout the banks, a group of three friends, four friends, it was such a vibe.

Day 2

I had no plans to visit Bahubali hills, because I already had a long week and I just wanted to relax and see sunset on the Udaipur palace from the Abrai Ghat, but I ended up talking to few guys on Zostel, and we ended up sharing a scooter and going to Bahubali hills. I think it was a really nice trip.

Drive to Bahubali Hills

Breakfast on the way

Drive to the Monsoon palace

Lunch at …

Spend the evening at Fateh Sagar Lake

But if I had to do it again, I would spend the second evening at Ambrai ghat as well. Trust me, you don’t miss a whole lot even if you don’t go to Fateh Sagar lake.

Places I left out:

  • Saheli ki …
  • Also the bazaar of Udaipur

Don’ts

Getting around

  • Rent a scooter
  • Uber: these are the only two options

Stay

Rent a hostel

If you’re travelling by yourself, or even if you are in a group of two or three, rent a hostel, try to socialize. I know the pressure of socializing when everyone is socializing, I am also not someone who just approaches people, and makes conversation, but I tried doing that to one person, and he ended up meeting me with the whole team. Udaipur is so small and so predictable that you would see the same people in the places you go. And it would not be possible if I wasn’t in a hostel. All and all, you would not regret it, most of the time. Sometimes, you will, and that’s life !

Find a good hostel/hotel since every hotel in India in booking.com has a 5 star review.

So, this was my 2 day itinerary to Udaipur. Udaipur was not a penny less than I expected, not a penny more. It was a perfect closure to the trip.
